One of the effects of this trend is the increasing interest of people in learning how to maintain and improve on their personal goals, be it weight-loss or strength-building. A keystone in the pillar of fitness is, of course, <b>proper hydration</b>. This article aims to explain the difference between the two, and which one is better than the other for specific activities.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>Apples and Oranges</b></u></span><br />
Not all hydration sources are created the same. The most basic of these is water; one can never go wrong with drinking <i>just</i> water before, during, and after a workout. Sometimes though, one needs a little bit of help, and this is where specialized hydration sources come in.<br />
<br />
<i><b>Energy drinks</b></i> are hydration sources that usually contain <b>stimulants </b>which 'wake' you up, increasing both your awareness and heartbeat; basically preparing the body for the 'fight or flight' response. These sort of drinks pump the blood stream with stimulating chemicals - foremost and most usually caffeine - and a whole lot of sugar. <b>This produces very quick energy in a short span of time</b>. Some drinks that come to mind with these properties are <b>Cobra Energy Drink</b>, <b>Red Bull</b>, <b>Sting</b>, and <b>Samurai</b>.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJtKJtjCLSr1cguuUMXNLRCHPZwDtB0IKJ8LKVxhvgGo1H27bAXpDIEZkR-jebRP1uH6MRfYevYPestETUXqiUhQ-pWKbf0AYTnjwNKtEKOUOCzkccXBceVSe1tI3bQ1Wn6rgw0-AXVsB0/s1600/Stock+Photo+energy+drink+cobra+asia+brewery+jsncruz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJtKJtjCLSr1cguuUMXNLRCHPZwDtB0IKJ8LKVxhvgGo1H27bAXpDIEZkR-jebRP1uH6MRfYevYPestETUXqiUhQ-pWKbf0AYTnjwNKtEKOUOCzkccXBceVSe1tI3bQ1Wn6rgw0-AXVsB0/s400/Stock+Photo+energy+drink+cobra+asia+brewery+jsncruz.jpg" width="278" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Not sure if this is relevant, but why do energy drinks come in 'aggressive' packaging?</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<i><b>Sports drinks</b></i>, on the other hand, are hydration sources that <b>provide salts and other nutrients</b> lost through water-loss from sweat and urine (and even tears, if the half-marathon is hurting you like hell). These lost salts contribute to painful cramps, fatigue, and sometimes, muscle spasms. It is vital that during prolonged periods of exertion to replace these nutrients as quickly and as efficiently as possible. <b>Sports drinks deliver sodium, potassium, and some vitamins in a quick-to-absorb manner</b>, helping relieve fatigued muscles.Some drinks that come to mind with these properties are <b>Gatorade</b>, <b>100 Plus</b>, <b>Propel</b>, and <b>Pocari Sweat</b>.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>The Right Time</b></u></span><br />
So which one to take?<br />
<br />
Since energy drinks contain a lot of stimulants, with some of these chemicals having the side effect of being diuretics (they make you pee. A lot.) I would never suggest taking energy drinks during endurance conditioning, training, or exercises. What happens is that the quick sugar- and caffeine-rush from the energy drinks spike up the heart-rate and encourage water-loss, which then leads to an increased risk for cramps and spasms. From personal experience, <b>the best times to use these drinks are 5-10 minutes before an intense but short weights session</b>. If you are planning to spend no more than 45 minutes to an hour lifting heavy weights with very little rest in between (think interval weights training), then this might be a good drink to take.<br />
<br />
However, since sports drinks have much less sugar and stimulants, but a whole lot of salts and nutrients, these will not 'energize' you so much as refresh you. One can easily lose a liter of water from one intense endurance session or a 10k training run, which means hydration is important not just to replace fluids but vital cramp-preventing nutrients as well. <b>For long gym sessions (lasting an hour or an hour and fifteen minutes) or for long cardio sessions, sports drinks are your best bet</b>.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>And Water?</b></u></span><br />
After all has been said and done, remember that both kinds of drinks contain calories. Granted, energy drinks have a ton more calories than sports drinks (a typical energy drink has more than 150 calories per serving; a sports drink has a little under a hundred per serving) but both may not be the wisest pick if your overall goal is to lose weight relatively fast. In that case, just have water. <b>Water is refreshing, virtually free, and has zero calories</b>.<br />

Good luck and have fun living well!<br />

I met some great and inspiring people, and I saw first-hand too the admirable large-scale organization that RunRio Events are known for.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>A little background on the Run United Trilogy: The trilogy is composed of three legs, with this being the first one. A runner who completes the entire trilogy (furthest distance offered per leg) receives an invitation to the prestigious closing ceremonies (I'm not very familiar with it, to be honest) as well as a round holder for the three medals the runner receives. The medals are shaped like 1/3 of a pie; they all eventually fit together to form a plate-sized mega-medal. I wish to be known as the creator of the term the "Rio-Plato", my nickname for the massive medal.<br />

Coach Z Villarin, a professional fitness instructor and a triathlete, and I led the warm-up sessions at Seaside Boulevard, MOA. We warmed-up the 10km and the 3km runners, as these were the runners assigned at our start-area. The 21km runners began in Bonifacio Global City, while the 5km runners started on the other side of where we were. Coach Irene Rafil - my partner <a href="http://jsncruz.blogspot.com/2012/02/condura-skyway-marathon-2012.html" target="_blank">during the Condura Skyway Marathon warm-up</a> - led the 21km and 5km warm-up sessions with another instructor, a colleague of Coach Z.<br />

Granted, any significant expense for a public official automatically raises eyebrows here in the Philippines (who can blame them?) but here is my rundown of reasons why it is perfectly alright to grant PNoy his new presidential car.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGOrtjmX82IKWV5aTabFSujZ1lb82IkgivFAQL2ojyuGW46ZaJd7cqb1kZEdoCdLQDlxf2MgRR5jhyphenhyphenh8vxamUYDh4kLZbTFr0jZPxDnih1Q7PGrPyHdPiq68pKkwCO8KGoJ8Zmx8mL3CWz/s1600/Stock+Photo+President+Noynoy+Pnoy+Aquino+jsncruz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGOrtjmX82IKWV5aTabFSujZ1lb82IkgivFAQL2ojyuGW46ZaJd7cqb1kZEdoCdLQDlxf2MgRR5jhyphenhyphenh8vxamUYDh4kLZbTFr0jZPxDnih1Q7PGrPyHdPiq68pKkwCO8KGoJ8Zmx8mL3CWz/s1600/Stock+Photo+President+Noynoy+Pnoy+Aquino+jsncruz.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">President NoyNoy Aquino, probably wondering Y U NO approve his new car.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><b>#1. </b><u><b>The Office</b></u><br />
He <i>is</i>, as many might still want to deny it,<b> the President of the Republic of the Philippines</b>. With this position in the highest public office comes perks and privileges. This is understandable. I find it ridiculous that a nation of almost a hundred million will allow their first and primary representative in the world to drive his own vehicle (a 4x4 truck). It does not matter how wealthy PNoy is, the fact and bottom line is that the Office which he currently sits in <i>does</i> have provisions for a vehicle worthy of said office. It's as simple as that. I am sure anyone in his right state of mind would <i>love</i> to be given a vehicle if the job came with it.<br />
<br />
<b>#2. </b><u><b>The Budget</b></u><br />
What worries many Filipinos is the sheer expense of the new car. I have heard that it may be a Mercedes-Benz limousine, with all the upgrades expected of a Presidential vehicle (this would include the standard bullet-proofing, heavy-duty engine, special tires, etc.) and this would understandably cost a lot more than the 'average' luxury car. There's something to think about here, though. The initial costs of purchasing a new presidential car means the Philippines is getting a brand new presidential vehicle (which he doesn't own, by the way) and safety for our political leader and commander in chief. A pretty okay deal, if you ask me. In the long run, it's better to spend now on a high-quality machine rather than spend hundreds of thousands later on fixing a dilapidated one.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO9Z0yu7td5gvJa2K-70X6bIsVss5O2C7Yh9qs5HySrtSpRnxXC8tF7HbDSBJQJvUcTDT75rV0vKK2wJOoINUTWImakMWWqCPXOioYmwv9Vs86w7QowJPx76LdaPnHZuhhcXIrsaxE0UAW/s1600/Mercedes-Benz+S-600+Pullman+Guard+2009+jsncruz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO9Z0yu7td5gvJa2K-70X6bIsVss5O2C7Yh9qs5HySrtSpRnxXC8tF7HbDSBJQJvUcTDT75rV0vKK2wJOoINUTWImakMWWqCPXOioYmwv9Vs86w7QowJPx76LdaPnHZuhhcXIrsaxE0UAW/s1600/Mercedes-Benz+S-600+Pullman+Guard+2009+jsncruz.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Given that this <i>might</i> be the car, it <b>is </b>envy-provoking</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<b>#3. </b><u><b>The Status</b></u><br />
This might seem shallow, but I believe he deserves a new presidential car simply <i>because every world leader has one</i>. The vehicle is more than a method of getting from A to B (if this was the case, PNoy can bike for all I care), it is also the extension of his authority and the extension of <i>us </i>as the general public. Would we seriously take it lying down if the president of the Philippines was mocked for being sent to official events and functions using a taxi? In the end, and as much as we hate to admit it, we will never allow ourselves - through PNoy - to be expressed in a lesser way, and part of this is <i>how</i> we get somewhere.<br />
<br />
Give the man a break; get him his car.<br />

Say goodbye to the traditional (and imbalanced!) food pyramid.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Harvard University</b> released what I believe is the more balanced and much healthier approach to food portions throughout the day. The classic pyramid puts in too much carbohydrates in the body (and here in the Philippines, this only means high-G.I. index carb sources such as white rice and white bread), and not enough good fats to satiate appetite. Also, I'm a big fish protein fiend, and this new chart emphasizes that a little more. The <b>Harvard Healthy Eating Plate</b> properly portions - and explains - why each section is as large (or small) as it is.</div>

I opened up my March running calendar with an easy 5k at the <b>May They Be One (MTBO) Bible Run</b> held at the Quirino Grandstand, Manila. It was a packed event, and in my opinion highlighted why organizations wishing to organize a run - even a fund-raising one - should really try to get professional events organizers to handle their races.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The run only featured two distances, 3k and 5k. The route was very simple; a straight stretch along Roxas Boulevard, Manila from the Quirino Grandstand to V. Cruz, and back. The gun start for the 5k was supposedly at 5am but the event was delayed for an hour, with the late arrival of the City Mayor a factor, though this was not announced by the host. The warm-up could also have been a little better given that the runners were standing around for a good hour before we actually ran. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
Organization-wise, a lot of the faster runners could not make it to the front of the start, as there were many people (<i>many people</i>) taking photographs at the starting line. I have nothing against personal souvenir shots of an event, especially in a fun run, but I think it's quite impolite and dangerous to <i>still</i> be taking photographs when people are running already.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My worst experience though was the short time in between the launch of the 5k and the 3k runners, respectively. What happened was that at the 3k turn-about (remember, both distances had a straight stretch), the 5k runners were going to pass through here as well. This 3k turn-about then became the too-oft seen human traffic of Manila. It was jam-packed, and it was crazy trying to navigate through walkers and bunches of people taking photographs. Not the best run, to be honest.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On a good note, the loot bag was pretty alright, but I'll be giving them away since I won't be using them (the shirt, paper bag, prayer leaflets, and an umbrella). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As for the dozens of people who were cutting queues just to get the loot bag, I suppose the "Bible Run" part of the race title just didn't register.</div>jsncruzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14007193879730011814noreply@blogger.com0Taft Ave, Manila, Philippines14.5747583 120.989105414.559392299999999 120.9693644 14.5901243 121.0088464tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6311601389828876125.post-58416005777018047882012-03-06T10:23:00.000+08:002012-03-07T10:24:32.971+08:00Skittlez Crew Total Body Conditioning Circuit<div style="text-align: center;">

experienced that on occasion – especially on unstable surfaces like gravel – it

<span lang="EN-US">Nike will always be producing
handsome-looking kicks, and I appreciate the simple but functional design of
the TR II. The pair comes with oval laces, which hold a knot quite securely; I
have never experienced laces coming undone during a run. The tongue lays nicely
flat top of the foot without excess material chafing the ankle. Also, the
trademark triangular arch support on the TR II provides the necessary visual
detail, in my opinion. It would have been preferable to have the ‘NIKE’ logo at
the back of the shoe printed using reflective material instead of matte paint.
Still, it is quite a good-looking pair.</span></div>

carry everyday trainers still sell those trainers at comparatively steep

definitely a pair of kicks that can only be described as bang for the buck. You
get a well-cushioned, comfortable pair that is versatile enough for indoor

<br /><a href="http://bible.cc/psalms/46-10.htm" target="_blank">"Be still, and know that I am God"</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That is what the verse literally says, but it means something a lot more profound to me. I feel this is a great reminder for each and every one of us to occasionally kick back, close our eyes and <i>just be</i>.</div>

A day could be overwhelming at times - deadlines, meetings, reports - that we get so frazzled and tense. This verse is nothing more than a simple and very personal reminder from the Big Guy to tell ourselves, "Hey, this is a little crazy so I need to take a few seconds to collect myself, tell Him the burdens I have today, and unload them all to Him."</div>

TOMS International just recently launched their Summer Collection in a press release which I was fortunate enough to be a part of, covering the event for When In Manila. Quite a pleasant surprise after when TOMS gave each of the three bloggers who attended a pair of shoes. Mine was a pair of <a href="http://www.toms.com/mens/botas/brown-canvas-men-s-desert-botas" target="_blank">TOMS Desert Botas</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">For every pair you buy, TOMS gives one to a child in need. Truth.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The pair was TOMS take on the classic desert boot, that rugged and versatile footwear used by many military men in desert countries. I was given the dark brown pair.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Aesthetics</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From the get-go, the boots (or as TOMS likes to call it, the 'botas') definitely look pretty rugged, albeit with a much thinner sole, giving it a sleek but utilitarian look. It's a simple pair, and it went perfect with a pair of jeans. My favorite detail about it though is the houndstooth detail on the inner lining. I thought that was classy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Comfort</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Since I wore the shoes to work today, I was expecting it to be a tad bit more comfortable than my regular leather shoes. I was wrong; it was WAY more comfortable, to a fault. This pair has a low ride on the heel (unlike most shoes) so it felt weird at first, but after about half an hour, they felt really good. The canvas upper was light and there was no restrictive feeling whatsoever in the toe-box. However, since I wasn't a fan of mid- to high-cut shoes, I had a little bit of discomfort from the edges of the botas rubbing against my ankle. Thankfully - and a great feature, may I add - the edges can be folded down solving the chafing problem in seconds, though this gave the shoes a much more casual look. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Cushioning</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I dance and run, and it has become second nature to feel how much support a pair of shoes gave my feet. Even though the TOMS botas had a low ride, they felt well-cushioned enough for a serious amount of wear-time; in fact, they felt very comfortable even after work and walking along Jupiter Street, Makati earlier. The flat sole is something I personally like as well, though I don't suggest stepping on wet tile floors. The tread of this pair isn't designed to handle smooth and slick surfaces.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Oh yeah.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All in all, I love the pair, and they look awesome with your favorite jeans. Good enough for a casual workday or a weekend out, in my opinion. Also, it's interesting to note that TOMS International is serious on social responsibility; in fact, <a href="http://www.toms.com/our-movement/movement-one-for-one" target="_blank">the TOMS One for One program</a> gives a child in need a pair of shoes for every pair that you buy.</div>

It's the modern-day debate that has divided the classic 'nerd' camp into two: the old-school bookworms representing one side and the techie geeks on the other. The debate? Which is better, a classic book or an e-Reader?</div>

I will divide this post into sections, tackling the merits of each, as well as the disadvantages. I have strong opinions on this of course, having grown up loving reading more than any other activity. Which one is preferred by a reader totally depends on which factor is most important to the individual: access, convenience, and emotional value - what I call the 'A.C.E.' factors.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Access</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On a rainy day, very few things are better than curling up with a good book and a mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows (yum!), and there are also those days when we <i>just really want </i>to read something right there and then. A well-stocked bookshelf provides that homey feeling where one can grab a read any time. While an e-Reader may at first seem to provide the same thing, it must be remembered that it is a slave to the power outlet; no battery means no reading, especially on long trips or cold nights without power - both very viable scenarios in the Philippines. A physical book may be a little better during those (rare) times. In contrast, an e-Reader's contents will be inaccessible if one is in an out-of-town trip somewhere with no electricity.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Convenience</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I live in a condominium unit, and most of my books have been either given away to friends or stored in the other home. The main concern of many people in the metro is space, what with Manila being one of the densest cities in Southeast Asia. With this premium on space, very few are willing to trade precious space for a large bookshelf. In this regard, an e-Reader may be the more convenient choice, seeing as one can store dozens if not hundreds of e-books and other reading materials. My iPod, which I use as an e-Reader, already has 14 full-length books stored in its memory (with a few more in my phone), books that would otherwise take up space in my already-full bookshelves at home. It is also far more convenient to use an e-Reader if one is planning on taking several books alone, considering how heavy a stack of books are. The risk with this kind of venture though is that if and when the e-Reader breaks, get lost, or is irreparably damaged, one's entire library goes up in smoke.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Expensive toy or the way of the future?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Emotional Value</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What is more important to you? The gorgeous display modes of an electronic library on the screen of an e-book, or the sharp woody smell of paper on a new book? This final factor is highly personal, and is very subject to one's preference. With a good hard-bound book pushing the PHP 1,000 price tag (and often more), a nice-looking e-Reader may have a steep initial cost, but the overall damage on one's wallet may be much less in the long run. I personally like to <i>feel</i> the book that I am reading, to be able to hold the covers in my hands and flip through the pages myself. However, I will have to admit that the displays on my e-Reader are just so nice to look at, with all my e-books lined up so neatly. This could go both ways, really.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the end, what is better should always be dictated by <i>you</i>. While physical books may take up so much space in the end, the act of giving these books away (or giving them as future heirlooms!) may be worth the trouble they will cause. e-Readers may be more expensive on the get-go, as well as having the 'all the eggs in one basket problem', but the sheer convenience and space-saving feature is undeniable. Choose what will make you happy!</div>

Haters. This word has come to be understood as vaguely as 'people who don't like you' and as specifically as 'critics who don't have anything positive to say about a musician's music'. Whatever it is, it's an inescapable fact that - as the famous meme goes -<b> <a href="http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/haters-gonna-hate" target="_blank">haters gonna hate</a></b>. While the ignore-rinse-repeat reaction is common (and safe) there may actually be a positive side to having haters (or being hated on).</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b>High Motivation</b></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Quick, what's the first thing that happens when you push against something? There's resistance, right? Aside from a physics standpoint, Newton's third law applies in life as well. the reaction to someone being overly critical could be displeasure, anger, and resentment, which could all eventually lead to you lashing out at perfectly innocent people around you, such as family and friends. There is a quote that says "How others treat you is their karma; how you respond is yours" and I believe this applies here perfectly. Why give in to negative comments and sulk all day? I was once 176 lbs and I am not exactly the tallest person around, and I was on the receiving end of 'fat jokes' for most of my life. Instead of accepting fate that I 'was always going to be overweight', I threw myself in a new lifestyle<b> <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.403898706614.193853.572856614&type=3" target="_blank">that saw 40 lbs melt away in 15 months</a></b>. Use negative comments for inspiration!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b>Honest Opinion</b></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One thing about haters is that they will nit-pick every single negative thing about you. How is this a good thing then? Chances are, they won't be merciful to you, not by a long shot. You can always rely on negative people to give you the most honest - albeit brutal - opinions of you. In the end, when no one is telling you that you should probably quit smoking, the hater who spreads stories of your legendary bad case of halitosis might actually be doing you (and your health!) a great favor. What does not kill you still really, really sucks to receive, but in the end, they make you stronger. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This guy is helping <i>you</i> become better!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b>Human Mirror</b></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Having said that, being inspired and knowing how to temper reactions and learning to accept honest perspectives can actually shed some much-needed light in the status of your real character. Turning negative remarks into something positive is one great step into becoming a positive thinker, and knowing one's limitations, weaknesses, and faults will actually help one focus on building up these weaker areas. Take the two together and take a minute for some self-reflection. You know what you'll see? An individual who can roll with the punches while remaining true to who s/he is. The hater becomes a mirror - one that does not just reflect any image, but an image aware of flaws. The hater becomes a non-selective mirror, showing us where to improve when our own vanity chooses what it wants to see in ourselves.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lastly, and above everything else, <a href="http://learningtoforgive.com/" target="_blank"><b>FORGIVE</b></a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Nothing is quite as healing as learning <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/forgiveness/MH00131" target="_blank">this most difficult of skills</a>.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The run was held in ULTRA stadium, in Pasig City. Getting there was a little troublesome since the general commuting methods - trains - were still unavailable. The location was also quite far from the usual run venues (BGC, McKinley, Mall of Asia, etc.). Anyway, the race was an important milestone in my running career as it was my first 10k.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I didn't manage to register beforehand, and I was glad there was on-site registration. For the PHP 500.00 registration fee, one received a running jersey and a bib. The jersey proved to be unfriendly for long runs, as I am currently nursing a chafe on my left arm (from rubbing against the material). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The race itself started on time, at 6:00am. This was quite a late gun-start so thankfully, I brought my heavily-tinted shades, which proved to be a wise decision as glare became a problem around 6:30am. One thing I didn't expect at all was the amount of uphill sections in Pasig. Some were <i>really</i> steep, and by the third km, my left shin was hurting pretty bad. I eased off a little, and the pain eventually went away.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Water stations were weirdly placed, in my opinion. There was one at around 1/3 of the way.. and none until the 7th or 8th km. It was a little tough around 2/3 of the way, due to there being no hydration stations in the middle of the 10k route. With the crazy uphill sections, this was much harder <a href="http://jsncruz.blogspot.com/2012/01/rainbow-run-result.html" target="_blank">than my McKinley runs</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All in all, I had fun, plus I ran with one of the pace coaches from the ARC Running Club! :) It's nice to see a familiar face, for a change. This race definitely set the bar for future 10ks and for my 2012 marathon training.</div>

I have seen quite a few Facebook status updates and tweets talking about how good this particular play was, so PJ decided to get us tickets. We watched it in the Meralco Theater, Ortigas.<br />

So that this is out right from the beginning, I really liked the musical.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In order to prevent any spoilers (I highly recommend this musical, plus it makes a whole lot more sense if you are from either ADMU or DLSU), I will just give a very general review, at the risk of being a little vague.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The music, in my opinion, was excellent. I found my foot tapping to the beat, especially with some scenes featuring really upbeat music. The first two scenes did this well; the energy was maintained rather well, with comedic jabs at 'the other school' a prominent feature in the play. I thought that this accurately portrayed campus life even to this day, as my batch-mates and I have had our share of poking fun at 'the other school'. The singing was top-notch, especially from the main Ateneo and La Salle leads, who were singing <i>while engaging in physical exercise</i> in one scene! I was impressed.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The lighting was beautiful too. Some 'rivalry' scenes were very well set-up just by the mood change from the lights. The use of green and blue lights, while very liberal, kept the spirit of the play, in my opinion. The production design was very well thought-out too. The play was set in 1968, specifically the 1968 NCAA basketball season (and one of the most heated years between <a href="http://www.ateneo.edu/" target="_blank">Ateneo de Manila University</a> and <a href="http://www.dlsu.edu.ph/" target="_blank">De La Salle University</a>), and I thought the values, culture, and attitude of the era was very correctly illustrated, even though what I know of said time came from history books.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As for the actors, it was very interesting how both sides captured little nuances that I thought really reflected a true Lasallian and a true Atenean, respectively. Take this comment with a grain of salt though, as my exposure to Ateneans are obviously much less than my experience with Lasallians. I will not divulge anything more; watch it!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Overall, one of the better musicals I have watched. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Much better than <i>The Sound of Music</i>, in my opinion.</div>
